About

CONDUCT BECOMING

Conduct Becoming is a portrait photography series by CJ Breil honoring veterans from diverse branches and eras of military service. Featuring more than 100 images, the series captures veterans in their present-day environments, often within the intimacy of their own homes or living spaces, alongside reproductions of their original military portraits.

Mission

                    THE PHOTOGRAPHER

CJ Briel approaches portraiture as a means of connection and storytelling. Through Conduct Becoming, Briel documents veterans not simply as subjects, but as individuals whose histories deserve to be seen, remembered, and understood.

The series encourages viewers to pause, look closely, and recognize the humanity within each portrait.

Past. Present. Service. Self.

The Artist

For nearly two decades, fine art, editorial, and news photographer C.J. Breil has traveled the world creating impactful images for editorial, corporate, and commercial clients.

Formally trained at Detroit’s College for Creative Studies (B.F.A. ’95), Briel blends traditional photographic techniques with contemporary digital artistry and brings a whimsical, slice-of-life approach to his work. His years living and traveling abroad—including time in Korea, Turkey, and Greece—deepened his appreciation for cultural experiences and the human stories that connect us.

His award-winning photography has been featured internationally in books, magazines, newspapers, galleries, and digital media.
